Common signs and/or symptoms indicating that your computer may be infected by a virus, worm or trojan horse may include any of the following:
- Unusual messages, images, or sound signals coming from your system
- Programs start running without you launching them
- Messages are displayed informing you that one of your applications is attempting to access the Internet without your permission
- CD-ROM tray opens and closes involuntary
- Something is wrong with Microsoft Internet Explorer, it locks up or does not respond to commands
- Your friends or acquaintances tell you they received emails sent from your email address which you did not send
- Your computer frequently crashes or hangs
- A lot of emails without a sender address and subject line in your mailbox
- Everything slows down when you launch an application
- Operating system does not boot correctly or at all
- Missing or corrupt files and folders
- Excessive hard drive activity
Keep in mind some of the above errors may have other various reasons as to why they are happening, such as hardware failure for example, or incorrect settings. For example your hard drive may have excessive activity because your swap file is set to an incorrect size.
