Wordpress Themes Explained

Login to your website and then click on Appearance You should now see a list of 11 different themes you can use for your website. For this example I used the Gear theme. You can choose whichever one you wish. When you click on a theme to use a new box will pop up with a preview of the theme you will notice in the top right corner of the preview window a link titled Activate Theme just click on this link to activate the new theme.

After you have choosen the theme you will be using click the link in the top left corner of your dashboard titled Visit Site you should now see the new theme of your website. If you like the new theme click the back button on your browser to return to your dashboard. Next we need to accomplish a few steps for proper search engine optimization and modify the header with your company name.

In the Appearance section you will notice a link titled Theme Options, click this link and make any changes you would like. Every theme has different options as you probably have already found out.

Under Appearance you will also see a link titled Editor click this link and do the following:

  • Click on Header on the right side of the window.
  • Find this information in the text box.
  • ‹title›
    ‹?php bloginfo(‘name’); ?›

    ‹?php if ( is_single() ) { ?> » Blog Archive

    ‹?php } ?›

    ‹?php wp_title(); ?›
    ‹/title›
  • replace the above information with the following:
  • ‹title›
    ‹?php wp_title(); ?›
    ‹?php if ( is_single() ) { ?> » Blog Archive

    ‹?php } ?›

    ‹?php bloginfo(‘name’); ?›
    ‹/title›

Now the title of any documents we create will come before the name of the site in the title of the document, which is very good for proper search engine optimization.

The next section under Appearance that we see is called Widgets. Go ahead and add any widgets you would like to use. I usually add everything that is in the list of available widgets.
