Recover Thunderbird Email From Crashed Hard Drive

Today I will teach you how to recover Thunderbird emails from a crashed hard drive. Assuming you have a fresh install of windows on your computer and access to the crashed hard drive please do the following to recover your emails.

In order to recover the files from the crashed drive you will have to have view hidden files enabled on your fresh install of windows. To enable this feature please read the following article. How to view hidden files.

For Windows XP users, on the crashed hard drive navigate to X:\Documents and Settings\[User Name]\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles with X being the drive letter of the crashed drive. Windows 7 and Vista users should navigate to X:\users\[User Name]\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles with X being the drive letter of the crashed drive. The emails will be in ...\Thunderbird\Profiles\xxxxxxxx\Mail

Next, open up Thunderbird and create a new local folder called OLDMAIL. Next, close Thunderbird.

If you look at the mail directory on the old hard drive you should see entries similar to this for inbox.sbd - sent.sbd and any other folders you previously created etc. Copy and paste the contents of those old folders from the crashed drive into the new folder you created called OLDMAIL.

Launch Thunderbird, you should now see all of your old emails in the OLDMAIL folder. Just drag and drop them into your new folders where you would like them.

Good luck and create a great day!
