How To Disable Windows Vista Services Part 8

Volume Shadow Copy: This service is used by the windows backup utility and some third party applications like Acronis True Image. The optimal setting is DISABLED and the safe setting is MANUAL.

WebClient: Allows programs like Frontpage to function over the internet. The optimal setting is DISABLED and the safe setting is MANUAL.

Windows Audio: This is the service that manages audio for windows based applications. The optimal setting is AUTOMATIC and the safe setting is AUTOMATIC.

Windows Audio Endpoint Builder: This service manages audio devices for the windows audio service. The optimal setting is AUTOMATIC and the safe setting is AUTOMATIC.

Windows Backup: Service used for the windows backup and recovery utility. The optimal setting is DISABLED and the safe setting is MANUAL.

Windows Color System: This service controls the Gamma and color mapping for windows. If you are like me and find yourself with three different models of monitors this service comes in handy matching colors across all three, or even two monitors. The optimal setting is DISABLED and the safe setting is MANUAL.

Windows Defender: This service will scan your computer while surfing or inactive for malware, spyware, scumware etc. The optimal setting is DISABLED and the safe setting is AUTOMATIC.

Windows Driver Foundation – User-mode Driver Framework: User-mode driver host management. The optimal setting is DISABLED and the safe setting is MANUAL.

Windows Error Reporting Service: Used by technicians like myself. The optimal setting is DISABLED and the safe setting is AUTOMATIC.

Windows Event Collector: Service used for event logging. The optimal setting is DISABLED and the safe setting is MANUAL.

Windows Event Log: Service used for viewing the event log on a computer by technicians. The optimal setting is AUTOMATIC and the safe setting is AUTOMATIC.

Windows Firewall: Microsofts built in firewall can be disabled if you have a router or gateway device. The optimal setting is DISABLED and the safe setting is AUTOMATIC.

Windows Image Acquisition (WIA): Used by scanners and some camera’s. The optimal setting is DISABLED and the safe setting is MANUAL.

Windows Installer: Needed by most applications for installation of software. The optimal setting is MANUAL and the safe setting is MANUAL.

Windows Management Instrumentation: used by a lot of applications, I wouldn’t advise disabling this service. The optimal setting is MANUAL and the safe setting is AUTOMATIC.

Windows Media Center Extender Service: This service allows all of your media center devices to connect. The optimal setting is DISABLED and the safe setting is MANUAL.

Windows Media Center Receiver Service: Enables TV and Radio support. The optimal setting is DISABLED and the safe setting is MANUAL.
